He was in a better mood last night. That's partly because I was visiting. My mother, near the end, used to pull herself together when I'd come over - wanted to show herself at her best - and there may be something similar at work here. Also, he seems to get along well with the midweek attendant - she's got more of a sense of humor and more personality than the others, and she's able to engage with him and treat him like a human being. It goes a long way.
For the first 15 minutes I felt relieved - like maybe this would all smooth out and we didn't have to think about nursing homes just yet.
And then I went through the bills the way I usually do and found the fraudulent credit card charges.
There aren't a huge number but that's not the point. The point is that my father doesn't have a T-Mobile account, so I'm not sure why he would have paid them $125 and change. And he hasn't turned his computer on in three years, so I'm not sure why he'd be shopping online and running up charges to Netcash.com and Clkbank.com and a bunch of other Internet payment intermediaries.
I do know that the attendants had access to his wallet so they could get at the petty cash and that's where the credit cards were. Stupid on my part to have left them there but we never had a problem with the private-pay aides. And of course, you never see the one that gets you.
I'm now busy faxing the power of attorney to the credit card companies so I can dispute the charges.
I'll have M start a conversation with the agency.
I'm heading back to DC with a cargo of credit cards and blank checks - nothing but cash left in the apartment now.
I'm glad I've got a new project to work on - wouldn't want things to get dull, would we?
Nursing home, anyone?

I'm sitting here with my mouth open and my brain going W.T.F
(as the kids say)! I can not believe on top of everything else,
one would have to think about this kind of thing. I can't even
begin to process that I will have to be alert to anyone who
comes in to help will also have to be monitored for criminal
activity. I'm so sorry
